The 2021 Leviathan is fabulous. In fact, the 2021 is one of the best editions of Leviathan I can remember tasting. The purity of the flavors is just remarkable. Dark cherry/plum fruit, spice, new leather and licorice are all dialed up. Shortening the time in barrel from 18-20 months to 14 makes a huge difference in how the wine captures fruit intensity and finesse. Few winemakers know Napa Valley as well as Andy Erickson does. All of that expertise comes through in a gorgeous wine that over-delivers on all counts.
One of our most requested blends, Leviathan, is the brainchild of winemaker Andy Erickson, known for his work with prestigious winemakers, including Paul Hobbs, John Kongsgaard, and Michel Rolland. While earning his Master’s Degree in Enology from UC Davis, he worked at Spottswoode and Saintsbury wineries before making wine for some of Napa Valley’s top estates, including Harlan, Screaming Eagle, and Staglin Family Vineyards.
Leviathan wines are blends incorporating grapes from various notable vineyards across Northern California, producing bold, expressive wines that showcase the freedom of American winemaking without rigid appellation requirements.
The 2021 vintage is 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 10% Petite Sirah, 6% Petit Verdot, 6% Syrah, and 3% Cabernet Franc. It was aged separately in 25% new and 75% second and third-use French oak barrels for 15 months before merging into this delicious and high-scoring blend.
