The 100% Syrah 2018 IGP Côtes Catalanes Infiniment de l’Ou was fermented and aged in a 60-40 mix of new barriques and amphorae, yet it shows considerably less oak than the similarly raised Compartir. Scents of espresso, black olives, and blueberries abound on the nose, while the full-bodied palate is rich, concentrated and voluptuous. It’s supple but dense and even a bit chocolaty on the long, velvety finish. While a big, hedonistic wine, it does an admirable job concealing its considerable alcohol (labeled at 15.5% alcohol).
Modern, plush offerings are the rule at this forward-thinking estate. All of the bottlings reviewed here are certified organic, and while hugely ripe and aged in new barrels, they carry the alcohol and oak with surprising grace and elegance. Best of all, they’re fairly priced considering the superb quality.
