Description

This will be a formal sit-down tasting of 8 wines from Paul Hobbs Winery.

1-Alvaredos-Hobbs 2020 Godello Ribeira Sacra Spain $34.99 bottle by the six pack $168.00
Wine Enthusiast 94 Rating
Medium yellow to the eye, this wine has a bouquet of lemon, pear and river rock. A wave of acidity washes across the palate bearing grapefruit, lemon zest and white peach flavors alongside notes of butterscotch, dried thyme and a hint of oyster shell that lingers into the vivid finish.

2-Paul Hobbs 2023 Crossbarn Chardonnay Sonoma Coast California $29.99 bottle by the six pack $156.00
Jeb Dunnuck 92 Rating

Bright yellow/green-hued, the 2023 Chardonnay Sonoma Coast is bottled under screwcap and is lifted and fresh with lime, white flowers, green apples, and lemon zest. It’s fantastic on the palate, with ripe acidity, a silky, stony texture, elegant ripeness, and a cleansing finish. A great value, it’s lovely now, but don’t feel hurried with this one.

3-Paul Hobbs 2022 Chardonnay Russian River Valley California $59.99 bottle by the six pack $312.00
Jeb Dunnuck 93 Rating

Bright yellow with a green tinge, the 2022 Chardonnay Russian River Valley was raised with 30% new French oak, as were the majority of these wines from Hobbs. In the glass it opens to elegant and ripe aromas of fresh salted pineapple, honeyed citrus, and fresh flowers. Medium to full-bodied, it’s elegant and long on the palate, with a wide window for enjoyment over the next 7-8 years.

4-Paul Hobbs 2021 Crossbarn Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast California $32.99 bottle by the six pack $168.00
Antonio Galloni 93 Rating

The 2021 Pinot Noir (Sonoma Coast) is a huge overachiever. Bright, punchy and super-expressive, the 2021 offers up boisterous red/purplish fruit. Lavender, rose petal, spice and mint are all dialed up in this heady, explosive Pinot. Readers will have a very hard time finding a Pinot with this much quality for the money. All of the fruit is estate. I am not sure I have ever tasted a California Pinot this good for $40 a bottle.

5-Paul Hobbs 2022 Pinot Noir Russian River Valley $69.99 bottle by the six packs $330.00
Jeb Dunnuck 93 Rating

A ripe ruby/magenta color, the 2022 Pinot Noir Russian River Valley is effusive and floral out of the gate, with lovely notes of fresh violets, ripe black raspberries, and a hint of orange peel. It has a refined feel, with fine tannins and lovely freshness throughout, as well as a lasting, fresh, juicy finish. Drink 2024-2049.

6-Paul Hobbs 2022 Vina Cobos Cocodrilo Corte Red Argentina $29.99 bottle by the six pack $150.00
James Suckling 93 Rating

This almost-Bordeaux-style blend includes 72% cabernet sauvignon, 21% cabernet franc, 5% malbec and 2% syrah. It offers deep, dark black cherries, blueberries, umami and subtle savory notes on a mouth-filling, moderately tannic texture. Great structure comes with a lively through-line of acidity. It’s hearty and sophisticated at the same time.

7-Paul Hobbs 2020 Crossbarn Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley California $54.99 bottle by the six pack $300.00
The Tasting Panel 94 Rating

A luscious surge of boysenberry and café mocha creates a fabulous first impression for this wine, which is elegant in its approachability. Finely grained tannins offer firm structure as notes of coffee and licorice deepen its formidable character.

8-Paul Hobbs 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Coombsville Napa Valley California $119.99 by the six pack $600.00
The Tasting Panel 98 Rating

With an attention- getting purple-black hue, this astound- ing red is silky but manages to eke out teeth-grabbing, dusty black-tea tannins. A host of flavors, among them graphite, black raspberry, violets, and Worces- tershire, sends a message of intensity. Earth and soil notes are apparent, sur- rounding a mineral component within the wine’s deep core.
