Hestan Vineyards 2018 Stephanie Red Napa Valley
$79.99 – $780.00California
February saw abundant rains, followed by lots of filtered light in spring and early summer. Both bud break and flowering occurred a bit late, but under ideal weather conditions, creating plentiful and even fruit set. Summer brought generous sun during the day and cooler marine influences, virtually uninterrupted by major heat spikes. The relatively mild summer followed by extended fall sunshine and moderate heat created near-ideal conditions for the fruit to accumulate flavor complexity with gradual increases in sugar levels. 31% Cabernet Franc 22% Petit Verdot, 22% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Malbec and 8% Merlot withb27 Months French Oak.

A Best Buy Designation
This is a rather meaty, substantial wine for a fair price. Aromas of boysenberry, elderberry, roast beef and violet lead into a thick palate of cassis, more violet and pleasant mocha touches.

Horsepower Vineyards 2018 Grenache Sur Echalas Vineyard
$179.99Walla Walla Washington State

There are two Grenache cuvées under the Horsepower label, both single vineyards. Starting with the 2018 Grenache Sur Echalas Vineyard, it has a deeper ruby/plum color as well as a spectacular nose of ripe cherry and strawberry fruits intermixed with lots of white pepper, dried flowers, orange blossom, and sandalwood. With medium to full-bodied richness, firm tannins, and beautiful depth of fruit on the palate, it might be the closest thing to Rayas that I've tasted, from anywhere. It remains to be seen if this can evolve into the same category at maturity, but no kidding around, this is a beautiful, elegant, seamless Grenache. It needs 3-4 years, if not longer, to let some tannins melt away, and it should have a solid 20 years of longevity. This is 100% Grenache bottled at 13.8% alcohol. R13-2 SP19-1 -
Horsepower Vineyards 2020 Syrah The Tribe Vineyard

This Tribe called best Syrah is positively hunger-inducing. The wine’s medium-rare steak with herb butter aroma is joined by notes of blackberry compote and fresh-mowed hay. Pie cherry, smoky lapsang souchang tea and bacon fat flavors continue the theme. Surprisingly electric acidity is the equal of all that fruit, along with fine-grained tannins. SPBX-3 -

There are just 30 barrels of the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Blueline Estate, a blend of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot, 8% Malbec, and the rest Cabernet Franc. It’s a medium to full-bodied, concentrated, yet elegant 2021 with ripe blue fruits, some violet, leather, and herbal nuances, fine tannins, and a vibrant, focused, classic style that’s going to age gracefully.

Hourglass 2019 Blue Line Estate Merlot
$89.99Napa Valley California
Jeb Dunnuck 94 Rating
The 2019 Blueline Merlot checks in as 82% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Malbec and Cabernet Franc. Aged 18 months in French oak, it's a ripe, sexy, beautifully textured Merlot revealing plenty of red and blue fruits as well as notes of tobacco and sappy flowers. It's ripe but also balanced, and it’s already drinking brilliantly. SP17-2 -

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is another fabulous wine in this range from Hourglass. It possesses tremendous depth and gravitas. Dark fruit, graphite, spice, chocolate and new leather all build as this potent, extroverted wine shows off its personality. St. Helena's Northern Corridor is famous for big, dramatic Cabernets. The Hourglass Cabernet is a terrific example. I loved the 2019 from barrel and am every bit as enthusiastic today. What a wine!
