Casaloste 2015 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione
$69.99Tuscany Italy
James Suckling 95 Rating
The blue fruits are so intense on the nose but they are really pure. Elderberries, crushed violets, cinnamon, blueberry peel, lemon rind, oranges and blackcurrant essence are all a feature. The palate shows the same intensity but in a held-back structure with tannins that float effortlessly over the layers of taut fruit and bright acidity. A long and chewy yet somehow delicate finish. Drink in 2022. SP44-1 -

James Suckling 94 Rating
There’s beauty and drinkability to this wine that really is enticing with blueberry and cherry aromas, as well as hints of hot stone and licorice. Medium to full body, integrated tannins and a fresh and polished finish. Shows focus and brightness. Very drinkable now, but better in a year or two. Try in 2021. R13-2 SP44-1 -

The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino has compelling aromatics of cherry liqueur, sweet licorice, cedar, and forested earth. The palate is crystalline and full-bodied, with red plum skin and warming spice. Harvested at night, gently whole-cluster-press and ferment in stainless steel, all to retain its freshness. To add a touch of roundness to the wine, we age briefly sur lie. This pretty Vermentino wine is of a brilliant lemon hue, with aromatic notes of candied lemon peel and lychee, and hints of orange blossom. The palate is generous with citrus and lean tropical fruits like freshly squeezed lemons, green papaya, and young pineapple. The result is a balanced and refreshing framework of bright acidity and ample minerality. 100% Vermentino.

Castaño Solanera 2016 Vinas Viejas

The 2016 Solanera is up with the finest vintages I’ve tasted of this cuvée (and I’ve had most of them). A blend of 65% Monastrell, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 15% Grenache, all from more limestone and higher elevation soils (and the Monastrell vines are 70 years old), it reveals a saturated purple color as well as full-bodied notes of blue fruits, cedarwood, spiced cherries, and peppery herbs. It’s deep, rich, and textured, yet also balanced and beautifully pure. It’s a steal at the price.
