De Wetshof 2023 Chardonnay Limestone Hill
$16.99 – $84.00South Africa
Vinous 90 Rating
The 2023 Chardonnay Limestone Hill undergoes between 80 and 120 days on the fine lees with weekly stirring. The aromatics offer squeezed lime and red apple scents that unfold nicely in the glass. The palate is fresh on the entry with nectarine and peach skin notes, a slightly oily texture, and a finish that I would swear was Viognier (it is definitely 100% Chardonnay). Good length, this is a fine and thoroughly enjoyable wine.

Alluring, with a range of dark plum, raspberry and boysenberry compote flavors that have a lightly mulled edge, showing hints of dried garrigue and juniper. There's a nice caressing feel on the finish. Grenache and Syrah.

Notes of smoke and spice mingle into honeysuckle and lychee in this perfumed, fruity white. The palate is opulent and creamy, packed with white peach, lychee and apricot flavors. It is freshened by a lingering mineral crush and hints of fresh herb and leaf. Enjoy this complex, hedonistic wine now through 2030. R28-4 -

Delas Freres 2010 La Landonne Côte Rôtie
$224.99Northern Rhone Valley France
Wine Advocate 98 Rating
Up with some of the greatest Cote Roties out there is Delas's 2010 Cote Rotie la Landonne. Revealing an inky purple color as well as an incredible perfume of spring flowers, violets, black raspberries, graphite and Asian spice, it has drop-dead gorgeous purity, full-bodied richness and a seamless, layered texture that fails to completely cover the wine's underlying tannic grip. Made from 100% Syrah and aged 16 months in new French oak, hide bottles in the cellar for another 4-5 years and enjoy them over the following three decades. SP35-4 -
Delas Freres 2011 Hermitage Les Bessards
$209.99Northern Rhone Valley
Wine Advocate 99 Rating
Even better and one of the top two to three wines in the vintage, the 2011 Hermitage Les Bessards (100% Syrah that spent 16 months in 70% new French oak) possesses an inky purple color to go with a fabulously rich, pure bouquet of smoked earth, ground pepper, underbrush and licorice that’s supported by awesome black raspberry and cassis-styled fruit. Full-bodied, seamless and layered, with masses of sweet tannin and notable structure, this beauty bucks the vintage stereotype and will need short-term cellaring to become approachable. It will have 2-3 decades of longevity. R25-1 -

Similar to the Saint Epine release quality-wise, the 2013 St Joseph Cuvee Francois de Tournon offers more richness, breadth and layer compared to the tighter, more focused, granite-influenced Saint Epine. Plum, black raspberry, licorice, cracked pepper and graphite flows to a medium to full-bodied, concentrated, structured 2013 that needs 3-4 years of cellaring; it will have two decades of longevity. Coming mostly from vineyards around Tournon and Mauves, it spent 12 months in 30% new French oak. R22-2 -
DeLille Cellars 2019 Chaleur Blanc
$34.99Columbia Valley Washington State
Jeb Dunnuck 94 Rating
One of the best Bordeaux Blanc blends coming out of Washington, the 2019 Chaleur Blanc checks in as 69% Sauvignon Blanc and 31% Semillon that was barrel fermented and aged in 60% new oak. Honeyed grapefruit, white flowers, sappy, green herbs, and a kiss of minerality all define the bouquet, and this beauty is medium-bodied, with a beautifully balanced, concentrated mouthfeel and a great finish. It ranks with the top examples of this cuvée I've tasted. R21-1
