Once again there is a subtle application of wood framing the much earthier and more somber dark berry aromas that still manage to retain an appealing freshness. The lavishly rich yet muscular big-bodied flavors that possess a velvety mouth feel before concluding in a less mineral-driven but more powerful finish that is a bit less youthfully austere than it usually is. This too should age effortlessly though it appears as though it will be accessible after only 5 to 7. SP3-1 -

With the 2017 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, Rapet has produced his finest white since 2014. The wine opens in the glass with a classy nose of ripe lemons, green apple, white flowers and crushed chalk, framed by subtle hints of oatmeal and beeswax. On the palate, it's full-bodied, deep and layered, with excellent concentration and broad shoulders, but also promising structural tension and reserve. The long, chalky finish is penetrating and intense. This is well worth seeking out. SPB8-5 R35-4 -

A relatively new cuvée that encompasses all the permitted varieties of the appellation and is brought up in amphora, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Apotres offers a beautiful perfume of black raspberry and blackberry fruits interwoven with loads of spring flowers, white truffle, spice, and sappy garrigue aromas and flavors. This beauty is seamless, medium to full-bodied, and my money is on it being the finest vintage for this cuvée to date. BX-6 -

The stunning 2021 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Imperiale comes from old vines in two sandy parcels—one in Pied Long and one in la Crau. Exotic aromas of orange zest, Campari-like spice and exquisitely ripe cherries appear on the nose, while the full-bodied palate is silky and creamy in texture yet airy and vibrant, with a long, zesty finish. It’s a definite candidate for wine of the vintage, alongside its Mourvèdre-based stablemate, La Part des Anges. Drink: 2025-2040. SP33-6

Most of the vInes for the 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Imperiale were planted in 1902, mainly Grenache, with a few other scattered plants of other varieties. Full-bodied and concentrated, it boasts massive flavors of raspberries and cherries, with just enough herbal intricacies woven into the fabric of the wine to impart a sense of lightness and freshness—it positively tingles on the long, long finish. Produced from biodynamically grown fruit at yields just half the maximum permitted by the appellation (16–18 hectoliters per hectare, versus 35), it's a tremendous effort. R11-2 SPBX-12 -

Another remarkable effort is the 2017 Gigondas Clovis Saurel, which is a single vineyard cuvée made from 100% Grenache. Rock star notes of kirsch and mulled dark fruits are intermixed with lots of sappy flowers and incense aromas and flavors. It's deep and full-bodied, with a wonderful sense of elegance and purity and ultra-fine tannins. It's going to benefit from a year or three of bottle age and cruise in cool cellars for 10-15 years.
