Dark and concentrated in the glass, this bottling immediately reveals an elegantly refined polish. Aromas of blackberry, dark cocoa and black pepper lead into a palate that's concentrated but perfectly ripe. Flavors of black currant, vanilla, toast and a hint of mint are wrapped in complex yet smooth tannins and ample, fresh acidity. R10-3

Dark and delicious aromas of black cherry and cassis are lifted by star anise and purple flowers on the cohesive nose of this bottling. There is plenty of that black cherry fruit on the palate as well, but it’s presented in an elegantly restrained way, with rose petals, cocoa dust and crème brûlée flavors all arising by the long finish. Functioning as the second wine of the estate (meaning younger vines and blocks that didn’t make the selection for the top cuvée), the 2018 Relevant checks in as 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot that spent 22 months in barrel. Beautifully pure cassis, violets, flowery incense, and spice notes all emerge from this beauty, which is soft, supple, layered, and just impossible to resist. It’s an opulent, sexy wine that certainly doesn’t taste like a second wine at this point.

A dense crème de cassis aroma shows a serious edge of loamy soil, bittersweet cocoa and roasted rib eye on the nose. The palate is wrapped in smooth yet structural tannins, offering charred black currant, black olive and more cocoa, with a sizzle of acidity persistent throughout. R35-3

  • Dalla Valle 2012 Maya

    $499.99

Dalla Valle was the first winery to demonstrate what heights Cabernet Franc could reach in the valley with their Maya proprietary blend, which averages 50-55% Cabernet Franc and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2012 Maya is a spectacular offering. I recently had the 1991 (made by Tony Soter) and it is still drinking exceptionally well. In fact, it could still be called an adolescent at 23 years of age. The 2012 Maya is already revealing great complexity with notes of forest floor, licorice, truffles, red and blackcurrants and a hint of graphite. The beautiful aromatics are followed by an equally majestic, full-bodied, multidimensional wine of great class and elegance. This sensational effort should drink well for 25-30 years. SP26-3

The flagship wine, and one of the first in Napa Valley to emphasize the fabulous potential of Cabernet Franc in specific terroirs, is the 2013 Maya Proprietary Red Wine. This wine usually spends about 22 months in new oak and normally has anywhere from 45% to as much as 60% Cabernet Franc blended with the estate’s Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2013 could well be the finest they’ve made to date, and that includes a lot of profound wines. An incredibly complex nose of charcoal embers, blackberry and cassis, some blueberries as well as white flowers, and a touch of forest floor is followed by a full-bodied wine with sweet, well-integrated tannins, a multi-dimensional mouthfeel, and a finish that goes on for close to a minute. This is absolutely remarkable wine – powerful, dense, but at the sane time, precise and elegant. It’s hard to believe, but I think this wine can probably age and improve for 25-40 years. Don’t miss it if you have access to it. R23-1 SP23-1

  • Dancing Hares 2017 Proprietary Red

    $119.99

    Napa Valley California
The 2017 Dancing Hares overflows with scents of plum preserve, crème de cassis, and spice box. The velvet structure of the wine evolves into deep flavors of warm licorice, black fruits, and olive tapenade that glide across the silky palate, then finish with volume and length. Made of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot and 6% Merlot. R41-2

Impressively dark in the glass, this bottling pairs intense purple fruit and flower on this nose with more roasted, umami-laden aromas. The elegant palate is a master class in tannin management, proving firm in structure yet soft in mouthfeel. Flavors of blackberry jam, cocoa, walnut and cracked pepper ride a lingering acidity into the finish. R12-3
