Another blockbuster, the 2013 Tsundere shows the more pretty style of the vintage, but certainly doesn't pull any punches with its graphite, black fruits, scorched earth and charred meat aromas and flavors. A blend of 30% Syrah, 30% Grenache, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Tannat aged in 70% new barrels, it has a full-bodied, pedal to the metal character on the palate as well as ripe tannin and a big mid-palate. The wine is made from two local grapes, the blue grape mavro blue and the white xynisteri. The grapes are grown on the southern slopes of the Troodos Mountains, about 30 kilometers north of Limassol, in poor volcanic soil. 14 villages are entitled to make Commandaria. The wine growers in Cyprus are lucky; there is no phylloxera on the island so no grafting on American rootstock is necessary.
The grapes are picked very ripe, even overripe, and thus very rich in sugar. They are then dried in the sun for one or two weeks to further increase the sugar content. Then, the grapes are pressed and the must undergoes a slow and long fermentation, often during 2-3 months. Sometimes the winemaker fortifies it with grape spirit, but it is not mandatory. The wine is aged in oak barrels for at least two years. The alcohol content of the finished wine is usually around 15%. According to the regulations, however, the alcohol may reach 20%. Commandaria wines have the sweetness, the richness and the caramel aromas in common. Some of them are almost overwhelming. To be enjoyed as an after dinner drink or with a chocolate dessert. Or whenever you feel the need for an energy boost.

Noticeably floral with blueberries and blackberries is the 2014 Petite Syrah Library Vineyard, from a site adjacent to the Hayne Vineyard on the back streets of St. Helena. Again, this has civilized tannins that are silky and well-integrated, followed by a wine with an enormous wealth of fruit, lavish concentration, and extravagant texture and richness. It is always hard to peg when these will hit full maturity, but this one has a good 5-10 years of development and should keep for three decades as well. SP19-1 -

This wine is an homage to Joe Duarte, a prominent grape grower in Contra Costa who first introduced Turley to the incredible vineyards of the area. The wine is comprised of fruit from the turn-of-the-century Evangehlo, Mori and Salvador vineyards, planted between 1890 and 1930. As a result of the sandy soils and impressive age of the vines, the wine has some of the softest, silkiest tannins we’ve ever seen in a Zinfandel. SP16-1
