Saxum 2017 James Berry Vineyard
$199.99Willow Creek District Paso Robles California
Jeb Dunnuck 99 Rating
I was able to taste the 2017 James Berry Vineyard beside the perfect 2016 and there’s not much difference between these two sensational wines. The 2017 reveals a deep ruby color as well as more straight, focused, yet beautifully concentrated style that reveals gorgeous black raspberry and blackberry fruits interwoven with pepper, spring flowers, earth, and incense. Saxum 2017 Paderewski Vineyard
$199.99Willow Creek District Paso Robles California
Vinous 97 Rating
Powerful, deeply pitched black and blue fruit, candied licorice, violet pastille and fruitcake flavors are braced by a spine of juicy acidity and a hint of smoky minerals. Stains the palate with densely packed cassis, bitter cherry and blueberry flavors that pick up exotic spice, cola and dark chocolate on the back half. This deeply concentrated wine shows remarkable clarity and litheness for its richness and finishes extremely long and spicy, with a resonating floral note and chewy, steadily building tannins. Saxum 2018 Bone Rock James Berry Vineyard
$299.99Willow Creek District Paso Robles California
Jeb Dunnuck 98 Rating
Tons of ripe black fruits, licorice, graphite, and charcoal notes emerge from the 2018 Bone Rock, a blend of 63% Syrah, 16% Mataro, 12% Grenache, 7% Graciano, and a splash of Roussanne that spent 34 months in oak. Sporting an inky purple hue, it’s full-bodied, brings a wealth of richness and depth, building tannins, and a monster of a finish. This powerful, meaty, impenetrable effort needs to be forgotten for 3-4 years and will keep for two decades or more. 98+ SP23-1 -
Saxum 2018 Paderewski Vineyard

Bottled in April (as were all the early release 2018s), the 2018 Paderewski Vineyard is 44% Syrah, 22% Mataro, 15% Zinfandel, 9% Grenache, and the rest Tempranillo and Viognier. Deep purple, it has a wonderful bouquet of blueberries, wild strawberries, ground pepper, orange blossom, licorice, and violets. Beautifully textured, full-bodied, and both rich and elegant, it’s a stunning wine to enjoy over the coming 15 years or more. SP23-3 -
Saxum 2019 G2 Vineyard
$299.99Willow Creek District Paso Robles California
Jeb Dunnuck 100 Rating
Pure perfection in a glass, the 2019 G2 Vineyard checks in as 53% Grenache, 21% Mourvèdre, 19% Graciano, and the rest Carignan and Syrah. An incredible array of blackberries, ground pepper, violets, and herbes de Provence all emerge from the glass, and it’s full-bodied, deep, and concentrated, yet as weightless as they come. It shows more gamey, exotic notes with time in the glass, it’s perfectly balanced, and it’s just an incredible wine from this reference point estate. SP23-3 -
Saxum 2020 James Berry Vineyard White
$199.99Willow Creek District Paso Robles California
Jeb Dunnuck 97-99 Rating
While the 2020 James Berry Vineyard White hasn't been bottled yet, I was nevertheless blown away, and I suspect it will be one of the finest whites to come from the region. Sporting a medium gold hue as well as a full-bodied, deep, rich, concentrated profile, it has a heavenly bouquet of white stone fruits, toasted bread, honeysuckle, and white flowers. You could safely put this awesome wine up against the finest whites coming out of the Rhône Valley today. SP32-3 -
Saxum 2021 James Berry Vineyard White
$199.99Willow Creek District Paso Robles California
I like to think that we are getting better and better at making this wine, or maybe our Grenache Blanc vines are producing better and better fruit, or maybe it’s just that ’21 was an exceptional year for whites. Whatever the reasons, I’m really enjoying our one and only white….it is full and rich, yet bright and lively. The magical combo I always look for in a white…actually in any wine really… It’s fresh, lifted and focused like you would expect in a cooler year, but has great concentration and texture from the dry weather. 347 cases produced. Saxum Vineyards 2020 Hexe
$199.99Willow Creek District Paso Robles California
Jeb Dunnuck 96 Rating
A step up over the Rocket Block and one of the finest 2020s out there, the 2020 Hexe is 51% Grenache, 17% Petite Sirah, and the rest Graciano and Mourvèdre, all from a single parcel of old vines in the James Berry Vineyard. Darker red and black fruits, smoked herbs, graphite, and spicy notes all dominate the bouquet, and it’s full-bodied, has terrific concentration, and ripe, polished tannins. It’s a gorgeous bottle of wine. SP36-5 -
Saxum Vineyards 2021 G2 Vineyard
$179.99Willow Creek District Paso Robles California
Jeb Dunnuck 97-99 Rating
Not yet bottled but already incredibly impressive, the 2021 G2 will be Grenache-dominated but includes smaller amounts of Syrah and Graciano. It’s loaded with red and black raspberry-like fruits as well as tons of floral, pepper, and spicy nuances, which carry to a full-bodied, pure, elegant red. It’s remarkably complex for such a young wine and has incredible tannins and a gorgeous finish. Don’t miss it. SP36-5
