Chateau de Beaucastel 2021 Chateauneuf du Pape
$99.99 – $510.00Southern Rhone Valley France

Including more Mourvèdre than usual (40%), the 2021 Châteauneuf Du Pape sports a deep ruby/purple hue as well as an utterly classic Beaucastel nose of ripe red and blue fruits, spice, game, truffly earth, and ground pepper. Reminding me of the 2012, it’s medium to full-bodied, has a layered, concentrated md-palate, sweet tannins, and a great finish. SPBX-6

Chateau de Beaucastel 2021 Coudoulet Rouge
$31.99 – $162.00Cotes du Rhone Southern Rhone Valley France
Wine Advocate 92 Rating
A terrific vintage for this wine, which was bottled just a couple of weeks prior to my late June visit, the 2021 Cotes du Rhone Coudoulet de Beaucastel is a blend of 30% each Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah, plus 10% Cinsault. From a vineyard just outside the boundaries of the appellation of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, it’s a remarkably consistent wine and always a solid value. Scents of sunbaked stones, black cherries and licorice appear on the nose, joined by hints of purple raspberries and dark chocolate, while the medium to full-bodied palate is lush and velvety, finishing long and complex.

The 2020 Carlmagnus has a medium to deep garnet-purple color and vivacious scents of redcurrant jelly, ripe black plums and boysenberries, plus hints of iron ore, black truffles, lavender and cracked black pepper. Chateau De La Bottiere 2022 Julienas Cru
$17.99 – $90.00Beaujolais Burgundy France
James Suckling 92 Rating
Chateau de la Bottiere Julienas Cru Beaujolais shimmers a dark ruby into magenta and soft purple. On the nose, it is a breeze of dark raspberries and wild strawberries, peppered with crushed violets, peonies, star anise, and an undercurrent of dark, stony earth. It is plenty smooth, pretty, and soft, but there is also a nice crunch of acid and tannin which gives the wine its lift and palate persistence. While exceedingly drinkable now, we’re confident it has enough gusto for short-term aging (3-5 years).

Chateau de la Ragotiere 2022 Muscadet Sur Lie Black Label
$13.99 – $144.00Loire Valley France
The old vines here do give some concentration. More importantly, they give a great swathe of ripe fruit that is so crisp and refreshing. Lemon and the lightest texture are lifted by intense acidity and a lively, fresh aftertaste.

Chateau de Lacarelle Beaujolais Villages
$18.99 – $168.00Beaujolais France
One of the oldest properties in Beaujolais, Château de Lacarelle is an outstanding estate with a history spanning over 250 years. The Durieu de Lacarelle family bought it in 1750 and had the good business sense to create a Paris-based company to sell the wines. Since then, the estate has passed from father to son, each generation inheriting the winemaking passion of the last.
At 150 hectares, the estate is large for the region, and much of the land is in the hands of ten trusted families of sharecropping tenants, known in French as métayage. The vines have an average age of almost 60 years, and are planted on the granitic soil that is typical of the northern half of Beaujolais, with a nearby flock of sheep providing the estate’s natural fertilizer.
