Stunning concentration of perfectly ripe blackcurrants here with a delicate whiff of vanilla oak and extremely fine tannins that are almost perfectly integrated on the seductive and delicate palate, right through the almost literally breathtaking, super-long and very polished finish. Try from 2022. SPBX-6 SP51-11 -
Chateau Pape Clement 2018 Blanc
$179.99Pessac-Leognan Bordeaux France
James Suckling 98 Rating
Beautiful aromas of lime curd, dried pear, grilled white peach and flint on the nose. So exotic on the nose. Some cream and honey, too. It’s medium-bodied with bright, tangy acidity. Creamy and focused with lingering dried-citrus and crushed-gravel notes. Long. Drink or hold. R22-2 SPB5-2 -
Chateau Pape Clement 2018 Red Grand Cru Classe

Coming from 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc brought up in 60% new French oak, the 2018 Château Pape Clement from Bernard Magrez is a gorgeous wine that's performing even better from bottle than barrel, which is always a good sign. Deep ruby/purple, with stunning crème de cassis and blackberry fruits as well as kaleidoscope-like notes of graphite, scorched earth, smoke, violets, and spring flowers, it offers full-bodied richness yet stays light on its feet, graceful, and almost ethereal on the palate, with integrated acidity and building yet seamless tannins. The Cabernet Sauvignon really sings at this point, and there's almost a Médoc-like regalness here. Reminding me of a slightly more elegant 2005 (it also has similarities to the 2016), it will benefit from 4-6 years in the cellar and keep for 30+ years. R5-1 SP58-2 -

The 2020 Château Pédesclaux reminds me of the 2016 with its concentrated, pure, classic Pauillac style. A blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, and the balance Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it has a great nose of pure blue fruits (currants, cassis) as well as ample lead pencil, chalky minerality, and violet aromas and flavors. Medium to full-bodied, beautifully balanced, and elegant on the palate, it has the purity and polish to shine even today, yet my money is on it benefiting from 4-6 years of bottle age, and it should evolve gradually over the following 15+ years.

This 2019 Chateau Perruchon is a full-bodied red wine from the Bordeaux region of France. It has a deep ruby color and aromas of ripe blackberry, cassis, and dark cherry. On the palate, it has a smooth texture with flavors of blackberry, plum, and dark chocolate. The tannins are well-integrated and the finish is long and lingering. This wine is perfect for pairing with grilled meats, roasted vegetables, and aged cheeses. It is a great choice for a special occasion or a dinner party. Lastly, the Syrah dominated cuvee (there’s 20% Grenache) is the 2016 Ventoux Cuvee Quintessence. It’s another deep purple colored wine that has terrific purity in its black and blue fruits, ground pepper, olive and graphite aromas and flavors. Deep, rich and full-bodied, with beautiful polish to its tannin, this beauty will benefit from short-term cellaring and have 15-20 years of overall longevity. WBC

Focused, with a streak of chalky minerality piercing a core of lightly steeped plum and black cherry fruit. Tobacco and cedar notes waft through the finish, leaving a slightly austere echo. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2021.

With its high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine has a good structure and ripe, generous black-currant flavors. Its fresh character gives juiciness that contrasts with the rich fruits. It's a wine with tannins and aging potential. Drink from 2023.

Showing beautifully on multiple occasions, the 2016 Château Phélan Ségur is incredibly impressive and reveals a saturated purple as well as pure cassis, violets, damp earth, lead pencil, and spice-driven aromas and flavors. Beautifully layered and textured, concentrated, with fine tannins and the purity and elegance that make the vintage so compelling front and center, it’s a high-class Saint Estèphe to enjoy over the coming 20-25 years or more.
