Noticeably floral with blueberries and blackberries is the 2014 Petite Syrah Library Vineyard, from a site adjacent to the Hayne Vineyard on the back streets of St. Helena. Again, this has civilized tannins that are silky and well-integrated, followed by a wine with an enormous wealth of fruit, lavish concentration, and extravagant texture and richness. It is always hard to peg when these will hit full maturity, but this one has a good 5-10 years of development and should keep for three decades as well. SP19-1

The 2015 Petite Syrah Hayne Vineyard possesses a gorgeous structural spine to balance the intense, inky fruit. Chocolate, plum, spice and succulent red cherry notes abound in this creamy, super-expressive Petite. SP19-1

4-Turley 2015 Petite Sirah Pesenti Vineyard Paso Robles California

The 2015 Petite Syrah Pesenti Vineyard is a deep, unctuous wine. Crème de cassis, black pepper, sage, lavender, game and graphite inflections are front and center in a Petite endowed with considerable Paso intensity and richness. The Pesenti is another stand out in this tasting of 2015s. SP19-1

5-Turley 2016 Petite Sirah Pesenti Vineyard Paso Robles California

Generous and dramatic, the 2016 Petite Syrah Pesenti Vineyard is quite different in profile from Turley’s Petite Syrahs (they don’t spell it “Sirah”) from the North Coast, bursting from the glass with a rich bouquet of balsamic cherry, dark fruit compote and grilled meat. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, lavish and expansive, with plush but abundant tannins, juicy acids and an ample core of fruit. SP15-2

he 2016 Petite Syrah Hayne Vineyard is the most perfumed and elegant of Turley’s Petite Syrahs (they don’t spell it “Sirah”) this year, unfurling in the glass with a pure and fragrant bouquet of cassis, dark plums, rose petals and pencil lead. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, with a deep core of vibrant, juicy fruit, satiny but abundant tannins and a long finish. It’s an exceptional wine from a singular vineyard. SP15-2

The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Montecillo is another stunning wine from Larry Turley and Tegan Passalacqua. Deep, powerful and explosive, the Montecillo once again shows how compelling Sonoma Cabernets can be. A host of gravel, smoke, game, sage, grilled herbs, chocolate, leather, licorice and black fruits infuse this rich, textured Cabernet. A big, super-classic wine, the Montecillo is shaping up to be a gem.

8-Turley 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Dragon Vineyard Howell Mountain Napa Valley

Turley’s 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Dragon Vineyard is a knockout. Inky, deep and explosive, the 2016 oozes with Howell Mountain character. Graphite, crushed rocks, game incense and inky fruit are all beautifully laced together. Even with its obvious power and resonance, the 2016 shows quite a bit of detail and nuance. This is a distinctly wild, feral style. Then again, we are on Howell Mountain.
